Boro Rally Comes Up Just Short in 77-69 Loss at IUP, Clinching Fourth Place in Western Division

INDIANA, Pa. – Jaymon Mason led an Edinboro comeback that saw the Fighting Scots pull to within a point late in the game, but Indiana(Pa.) responded with seven straight points to claim a 77-69 win on Wednesday night at the Kovalchick Complex.

Edinboro saw its two-game winning streak come to an end as the Fighting Scots fell to 16-9 overall and 13-8 in the PSAC West. IUP clinched its third straight PSAC West title, improving to 21-7 and 17-4 in league play.

Edinboro wraps up the 2017-18 season on Saturday, hosting Mercyhurst. Tonight's loss assures that the Fighting Scots will finish fourth in the Western Division and will host Pitt-Johnstown, the fifth seed, in a PSAC Tournament first round playoff game on Monday, February 26. Edinboro was picked to finish eighth in the coaches' preseason poll.

Trailing by as many as 13 points early in the second half, Edinboro clawed back into contest behind a solid defensive effort. The Crimson Hawks still maintained a 63-55 advantage with 7:13 left to play, before Edinboro put together a 12-5 run to pull within 68-67 with 1:467 remaining.

Trey Staunch started the comeback with a layup and free throw. Anthony Glover answered with a layup for IUP, but Jaryn Simpson's jumper and a 3-pointer by Mike Beck pulled the Fighting Scots to within a bucket at 65-63 with 5:13 to play. Glover's two free throws were countered by a Mason layup to make it a two-point game once again.

Glover made one-of-two free throws, but Mason's jumper in the paint pulled the Fighting Scots 68-67 with 1:57 left. That was the closest Edinboro had been since midway through the first half, when the Scots held their last lead at 21-20.

IUP would score the next seven points as Edinboro's next three possessions were a turnover and two missed 3-pointers. A Dante Lombardi drive gave IUP a 70-67 lead, and Malik Miller followed with a steal and layup to make it 72-67 with 35 seconds to play. Lombardi made a pair of free throws and Jacobo  Diaz went one-for-two for a 75-67 lead with just 14 seconds to play.

The first half featured a tight contest for ten minutes, with three ties and nine lead changes. IUP made 9-of-22 3-pointers in the opening 20 minutes as the Crimson Hawks would pull away for a 45-34 lead at intermission.
