Lacrosse Team Loses First-Ever PSAC Match at Fifth-Ranked Mercyhurst 21-6

Match Statistics

ERIE, Pa. (March 17, 2010) – The Edinboro women’s lacrosse team played its first official Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference match on Wednesday afternoon, with fifth-ranked Mercyhurst handing the Fighting Scots a 21-6 defeat.  The victory boosted the Lakers to 5-0 overall and 1-0 in the PSAC West, while Edinboro is now 2-2 and 0-1, respectively.

Jarrod King Leads Contingent of Six Boro Wrestlers Headed to Nationals
EDINBORO, Pa. (March 15, 2010) – The Edinboro University wrestling team will have six wrestlers competing at the NCAA Division I National Championships later this week.  The action gets underway at the Qwest Center in Omaha, Nebraska on Thursday, March 18 and concludes on Saturday, March 20.  Edinboro finished sixth a year ago and has been in the top ten three of the last four years.  Edinboro’s contingent of wrestlers is led by Jarrod King, the defending national champion at 165 lbs.  King seeks to become Edinboro’s first two-time national champion and comes in seeded second at 165 lbs.

Zak Clifford Named Edinboro Athlete of the Week
  EDINBORO, Pa. (March 15, 2010) – The backstroke was never Edinboro swimmer Zak Clifford’s favorite stroke growing up, but it quickly developed into his top specialty.

Clifford, who transferred from Shippensburg this season, excelled for the Fighting Scots in the 100 and 200-yard backstroke. He capped his season by earning All-American status and setting an Edinboro record in the 200 back while also finishing 21st in the 100 back at the NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships in Canton, Ohio this past weekend. Clifford (Oil City, PA/Oil City/Shippensburg) was named the Edinboro Athlete of the Week for his efforts.

Cerminara to Compete in Exhibition Match as Part of Big Ten vs. Big 12 Challenge

EDINBORO, Pa. (March 14, 2010) – While six members of the Edinboro wrestling team will take part in the 2010 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in Omaha, Nebraska on March 18-20, assistant coach Kyle Cerminara will also take to the mat.  The former University at Buffalo All-American will be part of the Big Ten vs. Big 12 Challenge.  The Big Ten vs. Big 12 Challenge is an exhibition men’s freestyle wrestling dual meet that will take place during the NCAA Fan Festival.  The Challenge is set for Friday, March 19 from 1:45-2:30 p.m. in Exhibit Hall C of the Qwest Center, the site of the NCAA Division I Championships.

Shelby Will's Goal in Double Overtime Gives Scots 16-15 Win at Converse

SPARTANBURG, SC (March 13, 2010) – Freshman Shelby Will’s goal with 24 seconds remaining in the second overtime period gave the Edinboro women’s lacrosse team a 16-15 win at Converse on Saturday.  The victory boosted the Fighting Scots to 2-1 and marked the first-ever two-game winning streak for the second-year program.

Zak Clifford Earns Honorable Mention All-American Honors in 200-Yard Backstroke

EDINBORO, Pa. (March 13, 2010) – Edinboro University’s Zak Clifford (Oil City, PA/Oil City) today earned honorable mention All-American honors while competing in the 200-yard backstroke at the NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships in Canton, Ohio.   The junior becomes Edinboro’s first men’s All-American since 1994-95.

Clifford, Marschner Turn in Strong Showings at Nationals
CANTON, Oh. (March 12, 2010) – Edinboro swimmers Zak Clifford  and Kate Marschner (left) turned in strong performances while competing in the NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving National Championships on Friday.  Marschner finished 19th in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:05.81.  That matches her previous season best.  Clifford came in 21st in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 51.36.  That was .12  higher than his best time.  Both will compete in their specialties, the 200-yard events in the respective races, on Saturday.

Softball Finishes Florida Trip with Rainouts
KISSIMMEE, Fl. (March 12, 2010) – Heavy rains forced postponement of Edinboro’s final two games in the Rebel Spring Games on Friday.  The Fighting Scots were scheduled to face New York Tech and Wilmington(DE).  Edinboro finished its southern trip with a 2-5 record.

            The Fighting Scots are scheduled to play in the Salem(Va.) Tournament on March 19-21, playing a total of five games.

Sann's Six Goals Lead Boro to Wet 17-8 Win at Erskine

DUE WEST, SC (March 12, 2010) – The Edinboro women’s lacrosse team braved wet conditions on Friday to even its record at 1-1 with a 17-8 victory at Erskine.  The loss left the Fleet with a 0-8 record.  Edinboro concludes its three-game trip south on Saturday at Converse.

Softball Team Endures Rain, Lightning in 4-1 Loss to Minnesota-Duluth

KISSIMMEE, Fl. (March 11, 2010) – The Edinboro softball team was schedule to play a pair of games on Thursday in the Rebel Spring Games, facing Minnesota-Duluth in the first game and Truman State in the second.  They were fortunate enough to get in one game as heavy rains and lightning deluged the area, although to head coach Dan Gierlak, unfortunate may be the proper word as his youthful Fighting Scots squad continued to struggle with the bats, losing 4-1.  The game was called after six innings due to lightning, and lasted nearly seven hours after starting at 9 a.m.

Women's Lacrosse Falls in Season Opener at Queens(NC)

CHARLOTTE, NC (March 11, 2010) – Year number two did not start as well as head coach Kevin Cooke had hoped for his Edinboro women’s lacrosse team.  Facing a Queens(NC) team which he coached for five seasons, Cooke saw his Fighting Scots open their second season of competition with a 21-9 defeat.  The Royals improved to 21-9.

Eric Morrill Earns At-Large Berth to Nationals; Jarrod King Seeded Second at 165 lbs.

EDINBORO, Pa. (March 10, 2010) – The Edinboro wrestling team will have six wrestlers headed to Omaha, Nebraska for the NCAA Division I Wrestling National Championships next week.  Five wrestlers qualified last Sunday at the EWL Championships. A sixth was named on Wednesday when Eric Morrill (left) was awarded one of 50 at-large selections by the NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee.

'Boro Softball Team Drops Pair Including Tough Extra Inning Loss to Indianapolis

 

KISSIMMEE, FL. (March 9, 2010) – The Edinboro University softball team dropped two games in Florida today. In the morning opener, the Fighting Scots fell in eight innings to Indianapolis, 1-0 with junior Beth Mullins going the distance and not giving up an earned run and striking out three. In the afternoon affair, Edinboro fell 6-1 to Charleston (WV) with Stephanie Cassidy’s solo home run being the only run for the Boro.

EDINBORO, Pa. (March 9, 2010) – Edinboro University’s Beth Mullins(Brooklyn Park, MD/North County) has been named the PSAC West Pitcher of the Week for the week ending March 7. 

The junior tossed a shutout to lead Edinboro to a 4-0 season-opening win against Urbana on Sunday in the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fl.  Mullins picked up where she left off a year ago in the season opener.  The junior gave up just three hits and did not issue a walk while striking out five.  A year ago she finished with a 15-11 record while earning first team All-PSAC West honors.

Torsten Gillespie Named PSAC Wrestler of the Week

EDINBORO, Pa. (March 9, 2010) – Edinboro University junior Torsten Gillespie (Webster, NY/Webster) has been named the PSAC Wrestler of the Week for the period ending March 7.  Gillespie was one of four Fighting Scots to win individual championships as Edinboro won its eighth straight Eastern Wrestling League Championship on Sunday.  The Fighting Scots outdistanced Pittsburgh, the regular season champion.

(March 9, 2010) – Five Edinboro swimmers are headed to the NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving National Championships this week.  The Nationals are taking place in Canton, Ohio from Wednesday, March 10 through Saturday, March 13.  Zac Clifford (left) represents the men’s team, qualifying for the 200-yard backstroke.  The foursome of Hannah Rankin, Kate Marschner, Katie Close and Desiree’ Thomas will swim in the women’s 200-yard medley relay.

Freshman Mackey Throws Five Inning No-Hitter in First Start

KISSIMMEE, Fl. (March 8, 2010) – Freshman pitcher Brittney Mackey made an impressive debut in her first start for the Edinboro softball team.  The right hander threw a five inning no-hitter to lead the Fighting Scots to an 8-0 win over Fayetteville State in the first of two games on Monday.  In the nightcap, 18th-ranked C.W. Post defeated Edinboro 4-1.  The Fighting Scots are 2-2.  Fayetteville State is now 5-8, while C.W. Post is 3-1.

Beth Mullins Tosses Three-Hitter as Scots Split Season Opener

KISSIMMEE, Fl. (March 7, 2010) – The Edinboro women’s softball team opened its 2010 campaign on Sunday with a split of two contests in the Rebel Spring Games at the Osceola County Complex.  The Fighting Scots opened the season with a 4-0 win over Urbana before dropping an 8-6 decision to Northern State.

             Beth Mullins picked up where she left off a year ago in the season opener.  The junior tossed a three-hitter and did not issue a walk while striking out five.  A year ago she finished with a 15-11 record while earning first team All-PSAC West honors.

            Freshman Jessica VanDamia provided the offense, driving in all four runs.  The Fighting Scots took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when freshman Marissa Pullo singled, stole second and scored on a two-out single by VanDamia.   Edinboro tacked on three more runs in the fifth inning on a two-out bases loaded double by VanDamia.  The two freshmen combined for four of Edinboro’s seven hits.

            The loss dropped Urbana to 1-1.

            In the nightcap, freshman Amanda Shields from nearby Fort LeBoeuf High School got the call on the mound but did not make it through the second inning.  Edinboro opened the game in the top of the first inning with a pair of runs on a two-run homer by Jade Thrower. 

            Northern State, now 3-7, answered with six runs in the bottom of the frame thanks to five hits, a pair of walks and a costly error.  The Wolves added two more runs in the bottom of the second inning to chase Shields.  Sophomore Stacie Balkovic came in and shut out Northern State the rest of the way.  Balkovic scattered five hits and a walk while striking out three over the final five innings.  Shields allowed all eight runs, although only four were earned.

            Edinboro closed to 8-5 in the top of the sixth inning with three runs.  Caitie Weber’s fielder’s choice drove in the first run, and freshman Stephanie Cassidy drove in two more runs with a single up the middle with two outs.

            The Fighting Scots tried to rally in the seventh inning but came up short.  Kari Falk, yet another of the freshmen in the lineup, doubled to left for her fourth hit of the game with two outs.  Caitlin Baer followed with a double to left center to pull the Scots within two runs but pinch hitter Brittney Mackey grounded out to second to end the game.

            Edinboro ended the game with 15 hits.  In addition to Falk’s 4-for-4 effort, Cassidy was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs, with Thrower and freshman Breanna Price adding two hits each.

            The Fighting Scots are back in action on Monday with two more games.  They play Fayetteville State at 3 p.m., followed by 18th-ranked C.W. Post at 5 p.m.

Boro Rallies to Capture Eighth Straight EWL Crown

MORGANTOWN, WV (March 7, 2010) – The Edinboro wrestling team may have entered the 2010 Eastern Wrestling League Championships in the rare form of underdog, but somebody forgot to tell them  With an incredible run in the second and third sessions that featured 16 straight wins, Edinboro rallied for its eighth straight EWL Championship, outdistancing Pittsburgh 135.5 points to 121.5 points.  Clarion came in third with 111 points.

Edinboro in Second Place After First Session of EWL Tournament

MORGANTOWN, WV (March 7, 2010) – The Edinboro wrestling team is in second place after the first session of the EWL Tournament.  West Virginia is hosting the tournament at the West Virginia University Coliseum.  Pittsburgh, the dual meet champion, is in first place with 103 points.  The Fighting Scots are next with 84.5 points, with Clarion coming in with 83 points.  Session two gets underway at 5 p.m., with the finals to follow at 7 p.m.

Jason Borst, Barry McLaughlin Post NCAA Provisional Qualifying Times at UNF Spring Break Open

JACKSONVILLE, Fl. (March 6, 2010) – Several men’s performers turned in strong showings for the Edinboro track & field team in the UNF Spring Break Open on Saturday.  The second day of competition featured a first place finish by Jason Borst in the 400-meter hurdles, as the junior finished with a time of 53.55.  That is good for an NCAA provisional qualifying time.

Hannah Kucewicz Takes Second in 1500-Meter Run at UNF Spring Break Open

(March 6, 2010) – Freshman Hannah Kucewicz capped the second day of action for the Edinboro women’s track & field team in the UNF Spring Break Open with a second place finish in the 1500-meter run.  Kucewicz posted a time of 4:53.50, a second off the pace set by winner Amanda Twigg of Lipscomb (4:52.44).

Jordan Roose Paces Boro Men at UNF Spring Break Open with Second Place in Steeplechase
JACKSONVILLE, Fl. (March 5, 2010) – The Edinboro men’s track & field team opened its outdoor season on Friday competing in the first day of competition at the UNF Spring Break Open.  The event continues on Saturday.

Freshman Jordan Roose (left) turned in Edinboro’s top finish with a second place showing in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:43.13.  The Fighting Scots also had a pair of third place finishes, with Kyle Wunz coming in third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.56.   Freshman Chris Carpin also picked up a third place finish in the pole vault, clearing 13’9.25”.

Tina Yi Wins 5,000-Meter Run at UNF Spring Break Open as Outdoor Track Campaign Begins

JACKSONVILLE, Fl. (March 5, 2010) – The Edinboro women’s track & field team opened its outdoor season on Friday competing in the first day of competition at the UNF Spring Break Open.  The event continues on Saturday.

            Tina Yi  (left) paced Edinboro’s running efforts as she started the outdoor season the same way she ended the indoor campaign – with a strong showing in the 5,000-meter run.  In fact, the junior outran the entire field, placing first with a time of 17:40.04.  That was over 15 seconds better than her closest competitor and just seven seconds off an NCAA provisional qualifying time.  Teammate Hilary Weismiller made it two Fighting Scots in the top three as she came in third with a time of 18:34.18.

Edinboro Heads to West Virginia in Search of Eighth Straight EWL Tournament Title

EDINBORO, Pa. (March 4, 2010) – The Edinboro wrestling team will head to Morgantown, West Virginia in search of its eighth straight Eastern Wrestling League Tournament title.  West Virginia will host the EWL Tournament on Sunday, March 7 at the West Virginia University Coliseum.  At stake is not only the league crown, but 19 automatic berths into the NCAA Division I national Championships.  An injury-riddled Fighting Scot squad will have to hold off a strong Pittsburgh lineup, along with the likes of Bloomsburg, West Virginia and Clarion, to defend its crown.

Fighting Scots Fall 81-67 in PSAC Playoffs at #1 Gannon

ERIE, Pa. (March 2, 2010) – Renee’ Brown dropped in a team high 18 points but it was not enough as the Fighting Scots fell in the PSAC Playoffs to top ranked Gannon by a final of 81-67. Edinboro ends the season at 16-12 while Gannon improves to 31-0. Kelsey Conklin chipped in 17 points, Samantha Reimer added 14 including a perfect 7-7 from the line and Casey Heller added eight points in their final games for Edinboro.

Fighting Scots Set to Faceoff with Local Rival Gannon in PSAC Playoffs

EDINBORO, Pa. (March 1, 2010) – The Edinboro women's basketball team hopes that the old saying that it's tough to beat a team three times in the same season holds true as they will battle top ranked Gannon in the PSAC Playoffs on Tuesday at the Hammermill Center in Erie at 7:00 p.m. The Fighting Scots edged Clarion 78-66 on Saturday to qualify for the playoffs with a 16-11 mark and were even at 7-7 in the PSAC West. The Knights concluded the regular season undefeated at 30-0 including 14-0 in the PSAC West.

Danny Walsh Leads Boro to Overtime Win over Clarion

 EDINBORO, Pa.Danny Walsh led four players in double figures on Saturday afternoon as Edinboro ended the season with an 86-79 win in overtime over Clarion.  With the victory the Fighting Scots end the season with an 11-16 record and 5-9 in the PSAC West.  It ends a streak of nine straight years in the PSAC playoffs for Edinboro.  Despite the loss Clarion is the number two seed in the PSAC Playoffs with a 17-10 record and 9-5 in league play.

(Feb. 27, 2010) – Forgive the Edinboro women’s basketball team if they don’t mind playing top-ranked Gannon for a third time.  The Fighting Scots have a date with the Lady Knights on Tuesday, March 2 in the PSAC Quarterfinals.  Edinboro secured its first PSAC Playoff berth since 2006-07, pulling away for a 78-66 win over Clarion at McComb Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon.  The win locked up the fourth Western Division playoff spot for the Fighting Scots,a s they are now 16-11 overall and 7-7 in division play.  Clarion, in need of a win to capture the fourth spot, ends its season at 14-13 and 5-9, respectively.

EDINBORO, Pa. – Sophomore forward Renee’ Brown had 18 points and a career high 15 rebounds as she reached a double-double for the seventh time this season but two free throws with just 1.6 seconds remaining by Hillary Shope for the Crimson Hawks led IUP to a 64-62 overtime victory at McComb Fieldhouse. MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (Feb. 21, 2010) – Zac Clifford is headed to Canton.  The junior, in his first season at Edinboro after transferring from Shippensburg, took home first place in the 200-yard backstroke at the PSAC Championships.  His time of 1:50.43 was a new meet and school record and met the NCAA A-cut time, earning Clifford a post in the NCAA Division II National Championships.  The Nationals are set for March 10-13 in Canton, Ohio.

Boro Sees Long EWL Streak Come to an End in 21-13 Loss at Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (Feb. 19, 2010) – The Edinboro wrestling team saw its 30-match Eastern Wrestling League streak without a loss come to an end on Friday night as Pittsburgh handed the Fighting Scots a 21-13 defeat in front of 1,937 fans at Fitzgerald Field House.  The loss is the second straight for Edinboro and leaves the 25th-ranked Fighting Scots with a 8-6 record and 4-1 in the EWL.  Pittsburgh clinches its first EWL dual match crown under head coach Rande Stottlemyer while improving to 17-1-1 and 6-0 in the EWL.  The Panthers are ranked 18th in the NWCA/USA Today Division I Coaches Poll and 21st according to InterMat.

Grapplers Conclude Regular Season Against EWL Heavyweights Pittsburgh, West Virginia

(Feb. 19, 2010) – The Edinboro wrestling team enters its final weekend of dual meets with the Eastern Wrestling League regular season title on the line.  The Fighting Scots seek their fourth straight dual meet crown, but to do so they will have to upset 18th-ranked Pittsburgh on Friday night.  The Panthers are 16-1-1, a school record for dual wins.  Edinboro is ranked 25th in the latest polls with an 8-5 record.  On Saturday Edinboro will celebrate Senior Night, hosting West Virginia.

(Feb. 18, 2010) – The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Swimming Championships got underway today at Cumberland Valley High School in Mechanicsburg, PA.  Edinboro’s Marie Nedley got off to a fast start as she posted her best time of the year in the 1,000-yard freestyle, finishing with an NCAA B qualifying time of 10:36.92.  That was good enough for ninth place.

The 5’6” Altoona, PA native had a memorable week as she set Edinboro’s career scoring record by breaking the record of 1,846 previous held by Jessica Rowe. Torsten Gillespie Named EWL Wrestler of the Week

EDINBORO, Pa. (Feb. 9, 2010) – Edinboro University’s Torsten Gillespie (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) has been named the Easter Wrestling League Wrestler of the Week for the week ending February 7.  The junior paced the Fighting Scots to a pair of EWL wins, 28-13 over Bloomsburg and 39-6 at Cleveland state.  The Fighting Scots have now gone 29 straight EWL matches without a loss while improving to 8-4 overall and 4-0 in the EWL.

Edinboro Hosts Mercyhurst in Key PSAC Matchup

EDINBORO, Pa. (Feb. 9, 2010) – It’s rivalry time again as Edinboro hosts Mercyhurst on Wednesday night.  The PSAC West playoff race is heating up, with the Fighting Scots moving perilously close to playing the role of spoiler.  Edinboro has lost four games in a row to fall to 8-13 overall and 2-6 in the Western Division.  The Lakers invade McComb Fieldhouse riding a three-game winning streak to improve to 15-6 overall and 5-3 in the PSAC West.  Mercyhurst came away with an 83-72 win in the first meeting between the two in January.

EDINBORO, Pa. (Feb. 9, 2010) – The Edinboro women's basketball team hosts a key game in the PSAC West on Wednesday at McComb Fieldhouse against local rival Mercyhurst. OBERLIN, Oh.– Edinboro University’s women’s indoor track team won four events and finished fourth out of five teams  at the Oberlin Invitational on Friday. The Fighting Scots finished with 96 team points, 13.5 behind third-place finisher Baldwin Wallace. Malone Swim Meet Cancelled, Gannon to Fill In

EDINBORO, Pa. (Feb. 6, 2010) – Edinboro’s swimming meet with Malone scheduled for today at 1 p.m. at McComb Fieldhouse has been cancelled.  However, the Fighting Scots will still compete today.  Gannon was scheduled to swim at IUP, but that meet was cancelled due to winter storm hitting southern Pennsylvania.  Instead, the Golden Knights will come to Edinboro and swim in an unscored meet.  That will get underway at 1 p.m.   

Fighting Scots Impressive in 28-13 Win over Bloomsburg

EDINBORO, Pa. (Feb. 5, 2010) – There might just be a correlation between Edinboro’s wrestling team getting healthy and the Fighting Scots starting to peak.  It sure looked that way on Friday night, as a Fighting Scot team minus just two starters turned in an impressive performance in defeating Bloomsburg 28-13 in an Eastern Wrestling League match.  It marked the 29th straight EWL match without a loss for Edinboro, with the Fighting Scots 27-02 during that period.  Edinboro is now 7-4 overall and 3-0 in the EWL.  Bloomsburg fell to 9-8 and 1-4, respectively.

Ben Rafalski (left) picked up two individual victories and a relay win and Ryan Sestak picked up two individual victories. Rafalski picked up a wins in the 200 yard IM, the 100 yard butterfly and was a part of the victorious 200 yard medley relay team. The Nittany Lions drop to 5-5.

EDINBORO, Pa. (Feb. 5, 2010)- The Edinboro University women’s swimming team had five swimmers reach PSAC Championship qualifying times during their 113-74 victory over Penn State Behrend.  The Fighting Scots finished 1-2-3 in the 1650 yard freestyle as Kayla Joy (left) won the event with a time of 18:31.69, which qualifies her for the PSAC’s. Marie Nedley finished second and also had a PSAC qualifying time at 18:37.79 while Megan Kaulius finished in third to give the ‘Boro a sweep in the event. Edinboro improves to 5-8 while the Nittany Lions drop to 6-5.

(Feb. 5, 2010) – The Edinboro wrestling team will look to extend its streak of 28 straight matches without a loss against EWL competition on Friday night when Bloomsburg visits McComb Fieldhouse.  The Fighting Scots are 26-0-2 over that stretch.  This season Edinboro is 6-4 and 2-0 in the EWL while Bloomsburg is 9-7 and 1-3, respectively.

Samantha Reimer Named to ESPN The Magazine District 2 Academic All-America Team

EDINBORO, Pa. – Edinboro University’s Samantha Reimer (Altoona, PA/Altoona Area) has been named to the 2010 ESPN The Magazine College Division District 2 Women’s Basketball Team.  Reimer earned a spot on the first team and now moves on to the national ballot.  The ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Teams are selected by members of CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America).  College Division District 2 includes Division II, II and NAIA schools from Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.

Zak Clifford Named PSAC Men's Swimmer of the Week

 EDINBORO, Pa.- (Feb. 2, 2009)- Zak Clifford ( Oil City, PA/Oil City) was named PSAC Swimmer of the Week for the week ending on January 31 as announced by the conference office today. He won three individual events and a relay as Edinboro’s men’s swimming team defeated Allegheny, 145-117. Clifford won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 53.17, the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:57.19, and the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:04.01. The junior along with Ryan Sestek, Derek Sapp and Ben Rafalski won the 200-yard medley by a narrow margin.

Edinboro Hosts Al Hall Freedom Games, First-Ever Indoor Track Event at Zafirovski Dome

EDINBORO, Pa. (Jan. 30, 2010) – Edinboro University’s women’s indoor track and field team hosted its first-ever home meet with the Al Hall Freedom Games at the Mike S. Zafirovski Sports & Recreation Dome on Saturday.   The event was highlighted by a team effort in the one-mile run. The Fighting Scots had five of the top six finishers as Hilary Weismiller won the event with a time of 5:16.54.  Tina Yi took home second place (5:23.55) and Cheryl Svetz (5:36.80) finished fourth, Kelly Bergeron (5:38.41) was fifth, and Alex Brasington (5:41.75)c ame in sixth. The event was not scored but featured participants from California(Pa.), Walsh , Clarion, and Thiel.

Blazetic and Conklin Post Double-Doubles to Lead Fighting Scots to 94-85 Win at Clarion

(Jan. 30, 2010) – Freshman forward Samantha Blazetic (left) just missed a triple double by two blocks as she finished with 20 points, ten rebounds and eight blocks in just 25 minutes of action as the Fighting Scots picked up a key 94-85 victory at Clarion to improve to 12-7 and 3-3 in the PSAC West. Blazetic’s eight blocks breaks the school record in a game and her 20 points were a career high. Senior forward Kelsey Conklin added a double-double herself tying a season high in points with 27 and notching a season high in rebounds with 12. The Edinboro, PA native played all 40 minutes in the game as well. The loss drops Clarion to 10-9 overall including 1-5 in the PSAC West.

Men's Basketball Team Looks to Continue Streak vs. Clarion

(Jan. 29, 2010) – The Edinboro men’s basketball team plays the second of three straight road games on Saturday, travelling to Clarion to meet the Golden Eagles in a PSAC West encounter.  The Fighting Scots fell to 8-10 overall and 2-3 in the division with a last-second 61-60 loss at Gannon.  Clarion, meanwhile, was winning its third straight game that same night with a 77-75 win over Mercyhurst.  The Golden Eagles have already eclipsed their 2008-09 win total and have a 12-6 record, including 4-1 in the PSAC West.  Edinboro has won the last five meetings with Clarion.

            EDINBORO, Pa. – A year ago Edinboro squandered a 13-point second half lead and ended up losing in California(Pa.)’s visit to McComb Fieldhouse.  This time around Byron Knight (left) and Al Muteba made sure that didn’t happen again.  The Fighting Scots almost allowed the Vulcans to climb all the way back from a 16-point deficit, but Knight scored a career-high 31 points and Muteba came up big down the stretch to lead Edinboro to as 79-72 win on the annual Red-Out Day.  The victory boosted Edinboro to 8-9 overall and 2-2 in the PSAC West, while Cal fell to 12-7 overall and 0-4 in league play.

‘Boro Can’t Overcome Turnovers in 69-52 loss to #21 Cal

(Jan. 23, 2010) – Edinboro came into Saturday’s game leading the PSAC in turnover margin at +10.1 but struggled to take care of the ball with a season high 25 turnovers in a 69-52 loss to #21 California (Pa.) at McComb Fieldhouse. The Fighting Scots allowed 23 offensive rebounds and hit just three of their 10 free throw attempts. The Vulcans took advantage of their 30 trips to the free throw line converting on 18. The ‘Boro was also held without a double figure scorer with Senior guard Samantha Reimer and sophomore forward Micki Cerchiaro (left) each scoring nine to lead the team. The 52 points for the Fighting Scots is the lowest scoring total for the team this season. The loss drops Edinboro to 11-6 including 2-2 in the PSAC West while the Vulcans improve to 13-4 and 3-1 in the PSAC West.

Jarrod King Third in Latest 165 lb. Rankings

EDINBORO, Pa. (Jan. 19, 2010) – The Edinboro wrestling team is ranked 21st in the latest NWCA/USA Today Division I Coaches Poll and 22nd in the InterMat Division I Top 25 this week.  The Fighting Scots improved to 5-4 in dual matches this past weekend with a comeback wins.  They defeated Buffalo on Saturday 19-17 after trailing 17-3, then rallied the next day for a 25-13 win at Clarion after falling behind 13-3.  That extended Edinboro’s EWL string of matches without a loss to 27.

Wrestling Team Remains Among Top Squads in Division I

EDINBORO, Pa. (Jan. 6, 2010) – There were few changes in the wrestling national rankings this week, and that included Edinboro.  The Fightings Scots moved up to 16th in the NWCA/USA Today Division I Coaches Poll and remained in 20th in the InterMat Division I Top 25 this week.  Edinboro continues to turn in strong showings against strong competition.  Last week the Fighting Scots finished fourth out of 31 teams at the Southern Scuffle, and this week they go up against a field in the Virginia Duals that includes eight nationally-ranked teams.

(Jan. 4, 2010) – Edinboro University’s Samantha Blazetic (Eastlake, OH/Eastlake North) has been named the PSAC West Women’s Basketball Freshman of the Week for the week ending January 3.  This marks the second time Blazetic has been honored by the PSAC.  A 6’3” forward, Blazetic helped Edinboro split a pair of games on its two-game swing to the east for PSAC crossover contests on Saturday and Sunday.   The Fighting Scots are now 6-4.

Chris Honeycutt Named EWL Wrestler of the Week

EDINBORO, Pa. (Jan. 4, 2010) – Edinboro University junior Chris Honeycutt (North Ridgeville, OH/St. Edward) has been named the Eastern Wrestling League Wrestler of the Week for the week ending January 3.  Honeycutt was recognized after capturing first place at 184 lbs. in the Southern Scuffle.  Edinboro finished fourth out of 31 teams in the event.

Frigid Second Half Shooting Leads to 65-59 Loss at Bloomsburg

(Jan. 3, 2009) – After winning at Mansfield on Saturday, the Edinboro men’s basketball team had hoped for a sweep of its two-game PSAC crossover swing.  The best the Fighting Scots could do was a split, as their shooting turned as cold as the weather outside in the second half in a 65-59 loss at Bloomsburg on Sunday.  The loss dropped Edinboro to 6-4, while Bloomsburg is now 6-4, as well.

(Jan. 3, 2009) – A cold spell down the stretch spelled doom for the Edinboro women’s basketball team on Sunday afternoon, as the Fighting Scots suffered a 77-72 defeat to Bloomsburg in Nelson Field House in a PSAC crossover contest.  The loss dropped Edinboro to 6-4, while Bloomsburg is now 8-2.  It also snapped a 13-game winning streak for the Fighting Scots against the PSAC East.

Boro Rallies in Second Half for Big Road Win at Mansfield

MANSFIELD, Pa. (Jan. 2, 2010) – After trailing for most of the first half the Edinboro men’s basketball team took the lead early in the second half and held Mansfield scoreless the final 2 minutes 28 seconds to post an 85-74 road win at Decker Hall on Saturday.  The PSAC crossover win left the Fighting Scots with a 6-3 record, while the Mountaineers are now 6-4.  The Fighting Scots continue their two-game eastern swing on Sunday at Bloomsburg.  The Huskies improve to 5-4 with a 70-38 win over Lock Haven on Saturday.

Balanced Attack Leads Boro to 90-48 Win at Mansfield

Mansfield, PA (Jan. 2, 2010) – The Edinboro University women’s basketball team picked up a PSAC Crossover victory, 90-48, at Mansfield to start off the 2010 portion of their schedule. Freshman Samantha Blazetic led five scorers in double figures for the Fighting Scots with 17 points. Blazetic also pulled down a team high eight rebounds. The pressure defense proved to be the difference as the Boro forced 28 turnovers and held the Mountaineers to just 29.6% in the second half. The Fighting Scots improve to 6-3 while Mansfield drops to 2-7.

Fighting Scots Ring in 2010 with PSAC Crossover Action

Edinboro, PA (Dec. 31, 2009)– The Edinboro University women’s basketball team will open up play in 2010 with two PSAC Crossover games. The Fighting Scots will enter Saturday afternoon's game against Mansfield with a 5-3 mark after splitting their two games at the United Electric Holiday Tournament hosted by Bellarmine. The Mountianeers are 2-6 on the season and have not played since December 12. On Sunday, the Fighting Scots travel to Bloomsburg to play the 6-1 Huskies.  Both games will tip at 1:00 p.m.

Seven Wrestlers Place, Edinboro Fourth at Southern Scuffle

GREENSBORO, NC (Dec. 30, 2009) – Chris Honeycutt (left) led a contingent of seven Edinboro wrestlers to place at the Southern Scuffle, as Edinboro finished fourth out of 31 teams in the two-day event held at the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center.  Honeycutt took home first place place at 184 lbs.  Three Fighting Scots – Torsten Gillespie (149 lbs.), Jarrod King (165 lbs.), and Chris Birchler (285 lbs.) – finished third, with Eric Morrill coming in fifth at 125 lbs. and Ashton Osterberg and Phil Moricone placing eighth at 133 and 174 lbs., respectively.

Six Wrestlers Reach Quarterfinals, Boro in Fourth Place after First Day of Southern Scuffle
GREENSBORO, NC (Dec. 29, 2009) – The Edinboro wrestling team is in fourth place after the first day of competition at the Southern Scuffle.  The event is being held in the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center.  Six Fighting Scots have reached the quarterfinals, with four more grapplers still alive in the consolation brackets.  In addition, Chris Honeycutt is wrestling unattached and has also reached the quarterfinals at 184 lbs.

Wrestling Team to Face Plenty of Competition at Southern Scuffle

EDINBORO, Pa. (Dec. 28, 2009) – Never one to shy away from strong competition, Edinboro wrestling coach Tim Flynn takes his 16th-ranked Fighting Scots to the Southern Scuffle on Tuesday and Wednesday.  The 30-team field includes seven ranked teams, including fifth-ranked Minnesota and eighth-ranked Cornell.  The field of over 400 wrestlers includes more than 50 nationally-ranked grapplers, with four ranked number one at their respective weight class.  That includes Edinboro’s Jarrod King, ranked number one at 165 lbs.

Men's Basketball Team Ends 2009 Against Strong Alderson-Broaddus Club on Tuesday

EDINBORO, Pa. (December 28, 2009) – The Edinboro men’s basketball team plays its final game before the new Year, hosting a strong Alderson-Broaddus team on Tuesday, December 29.  Tipoff at McComb Fieldhouse is slated for 7 p.m.  Edinboro enters the game with a 5-2 record after defeating Charleston(WV) on December 12.  The Battlers are 2-2 after reaching the Atlantic Regional semifinals a year ago.  They have won at least 22 games in each of the last eight seasons.

Kelsey Conklin Named PSAC West Player of the Week

EDINBORO, Pa. (Dec. 23, 2009) – Edinboro University senior Kelsey Conklin (Edinboro, PA/General McLane) has been named the PSAC West Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for her performance in the United Electric Holiday Tournament.  Conklin helped the Fighting Scots advance to the championship game with a 98-83 win over Merrimack, before suffering an 85-77 loss to host Bellarmine in the championship game.  That leaves Edinboro with a 5-3 record heading into 2010.

EDINBORO, Pa. (Dec. 23, 2009) – The Edinboro wrestling team moved up one spot in the latest NWCA/USA Today Division I Coaches Poll after its second place showing while facing a strong field in the Reno Tournament of Champions.  The Fighting Scots are now 16th after being ranked 17th for several weeks.

18-0 Run Keys Fighting Scots to 98-83 Win over Merrimack

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Edinboro women’s basketball team advanced to the championship game of the Bellarmine United Electric Holiday Tournament with a  98-83 win over Merrimack in Knights Hall.  With the victory the Fighting Scots improved to 5-2 while the Warriors fell to 2-8.  Edinboro will face the winner of Monday’s other semifinal game between Bellarmine and Queens(NY) in Tuesday’s championship game.  That contest is set for an 8 p.m. tipoff.
