Bemis, Anderson Qualify for NCAA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships

 

EDINBORO, Pa. (May 15, 2012) – The Edinboro University track & field teams will have a pair of competitors in next week’s NCAA Division II Track & field Championships.  Tabitha Bemis will represent the women’s team and Scott Anderson has qualified for the men.  The championships will be held Thursday, May 24 through Saturday, May 25 at the Neta & Eddie DeRose ThunderBowl in Pueblo, Colorado. Colorado State University at Pueblo will serve as the host.

Lindsey Evans Edinboro's First-Ever All-PSAC Performer in Women's Lacrosse

EDINBORO, Pa. (May 9, 2012) – Some day Lindsey Evans will be the answer to a trivia question at Edinboro.  The junior from Rochester, NY today became Edinboro’s first-ever All-PSAC performer in women’s lacrosse, as she was named to the 2012 All-PSAC Women’s Lacrosse Second Team.

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ (May 5, 2012) – A week ago former Edinboro University wrestling standout Josh Koscheck was being inducted into the Edinboro Athletic Hall of Fame.  On Saturday night he was at the Izod Center in New Jersey fighting in one of the co-feature bouts of the UFC on Fox on national television.  He would suffer a split decision loss in a welterweight fight to another former wrestling standout, Johny Hendricks, who starred at Oklahoma State.

Scott Anderson Wins 1,500-Meter Run, Boro Finishes Sixth at PSAC Track & Field Championships

Tabitha Bemis Named Most Outstanding Athlete at PSAC Track & Field Championships

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. (May 5, 2012) – Edinboro University sophomore Tabitha Bemis was named the Most Outstanding Field Athlete and Most Outstanding Overall Athlete at the 2012 PSAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships.  The event concluded on Saturday at Bloomsburg University, with the sophomore winning the two awards after previously doing so at the indoor championships in February.

Dustin Thomas Presented PSAC Champion Scholar Award for Men's Track & Field

 

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Edinboro University junior Dustin Thomas (Broadview Heights, OH/ North Royalton) has been presented with the PSAC Champion Scholar Award for the men’s outdoor track & field championship. He was presented the award on Saturday morning prior to the start of competition of the third day of the PSAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Bloomsburg University by Millersville Associate Director of Athletics Dr Anthony Grant, the PSAC track liaison.

Hahn Earns Fourth First Place Finish for Scots

Day One Result

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. (May 4, 2012) – Ben Hahn led the men’s track and field team with a victory in the 5,000 meter run, earning All-PSAC honors as well, finishing the competition in a time of 14:46.75, a full thirteen seconds ahead of Stephen Schelander of Shippensburg.  Hahn’s victory, running away from the approaching storm, was the fourth of the tournament for the Fighting Scots.  Edinboro currently is in second overall with 32 points, trailing the Red Raiders of Shippensburg who have a total of 56 points through two days of competition.

Bemis Sets School Record in Hurdles

Day One Results

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. (May 4, 2012) – Tabitha Bemis earned a first place finish and All-PSAC honors in the long jump and her jump of 6.13 meters was third in the Division II.   Bemis also qualified for tomorrow’s final while setting a school record and becoming a national qualifier in the 100-meter hurdles after finishing second in today’s prelims with a time of 14.22 which was just .03 seconds behind Caitlin Stuetz of Shippensburg.

Deibel Wins 10,000-Meter Run at PSAC's

            BLOOMSBURG, Pa. (May 3, 2012) – Edinboro University’s Bryan Deibel took home the first championship of the 2012 PSAC Track & Field Championships on Thursday night.  The sophomore posted a 12-second victory over Lock Haven’s Alex Monroe in the 10,000-meter run at Bloomsburg’s Redman Stadium.

Bemis leads Women's Track and Field into PSAC Championships

EDINBORO, Pa. (May 1, 2012) – The Edinboro women’s track and field team will travel to Bloomsburg University to take part in the PSAC Track and Field Championships this weekend. The Fighting Scots are looking to build on not just the strong Outdoor season but also on the strong showing as a team the Fighting Scots exhibited at the PSAC Indoor Track and Field Championships back in February.  Edinboro will feature multiple athletes who have excellent chances of scoring and earning quality results, including Tabitha Bemis, Kacey Gibson, Stephanie Smigiera and Kat Faller.  The PSAC Track and Field Championships will run from Thursday, May 3 – Saturday May 5 on the campus of Bloomsburg University.

Men's Track and Field Set for PSAC Championships

EDINBORO, Pa. (May 1, 2012) – The Edinboro men’s track and field team heads to the PSAC Track and Field Championships hosted by Bloomsburg University this weekend with multiple goals in mind.  For some runners like Scott Anderson, the two-time All-American in Cross Country, and Ben Hahn, the reigning 5,000-meter All-American, having already qualified for Nationals, the PSAC Championships will be used as tune-up.   Other athletes will look to improve off close finishes from last year’s competition, such as Jordan Roose, who came in second place in the steeplechase in 2011.  The PSAC Track and Field Championships will run from Thursday, May 3 – Saturday May 5 on the campus of Bloomsburg University.

Athletic Hall of Fame Adds Eight Members on Saturday Night

 

EDINBORO, Pa. (April 28, 2012) -- The Edinboro University Athletic Hall of Fame celebrated its 31st year with the induction of eight new members on Saturday, April 28.  The eight new members swelled the Edinboro Hall of Fame membership to 211 inductees.  The Class of 2012 was formally inducted at the 31st Annual Hall of Fame Awards Ceremony at McComb Fieldhouse.

Brown, Honeycutt Named Athletes of the Year; Swank Repeats as Coach of the Year

 

EDINBORO, Pa. (April 28, 2012) – The Edinboro University Athletic Department recognized its 2012 Senior Male and Female Athletes of the Year and Coach of the Year on Saturday, April 28 at the 31st Annual Hall of Fame Ceremony.  Women’s basketball coach Stan Swank was named Edinboro’s Coach of the Year, while women’s basketball standout Renee’ Brown (Pittsburgh, PA/Mount Alvernia Cathlic) was selected the Nancy Acker Award recipient as the Senior Female Athlete of the Year and Chris Honeycutt (North Ridgeville, OH/St. Edward) was selected the Sox Harrison Award winner as the Senior Male Athlete of the Year.

Tabitha Bemis Posts NCAA Qualifier in Triple Jump at Penn Relays

(April 27, 2012) – Edinboro’s Tabitha Bemis continued her outstanding season in track & field with another strong showing at the Penn Relays on Friday.  After taking fifth place in the College Women’s Long Jump Eastern on Thursday, she followed up with an eighth place showing in the College Women’s Triple Jump Eastern on Friday.

Fighting Scots Turn in Strong Showing at Penn Relays

            PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (April 26, 2012) – The Edinboro track & field teams’ contingent of competitors at the Penn Relays turned in a strong showing in the first day of competition on Thursday.  Leading the way was Scott Anderson (left), who turned in a fourth place finish while competing in the College Men’s 10,000-meter Championship late Thursday night.  His time of 29:41.31 was the best recorded in the PSAC this year, bettering the previous mark of teammate Ben Hahn.  Hahn just set the mark of 30:00.74 at the Mt. Sac Relays a week earlier.

Mackessy Scores 100th Career Goal, Fighting Scots Fall on Senior Day

EDINBORO, Pa. (April 26, 2012) – Senior Abbey Mackessy led the Fighting Scots with three goals on the afternoon giving her a career total 100 goals in her three years of play for Edinboro. Mackessy leaves the Fighting Scots as the programs all-time leading scorer.  The Fighting Scots however could not pull out the victory on Senior Day against Slippery Rock, falling 10-7.  Edinboro says farewell to five seniors; Abbey Mackessy, Samantha Kaiser, Lauren Kincaid, Lauren Davis and Teresa Fiori.

Lacrosse Team Welcomes Slippery Rock for Senior Day
EDINBORO, Pa. (April 24, 2012) – The Edinboro Fighting Scots will entertain Slippery Rock on Thursday afternoon for senior day and the final lacrosse match of the season. The Fighting Scots enter the contest with the most wins for the program in a single season with seven; two better than last year’s high mark. Their overall record is 7-9 with a 2-8 record in PSAC play. The Rock comes into the match-up with their eyes set on a potential play-off berth, giving the Fighting Scots a chance to play spoiler. Slippery Rock currently sits in seventh place in the PSAC with a record of 9-5 overall and 5-5 in PSAC play.

Track Teams Earn Five First Place Finishes

Berea, OH (April 21, 2012) – The Fighting Scots track teams took home five first place finishes  and six new PSAC Outdoor Track and Field Championship qualifying times at the Sparky Adams Invitational hosted by Baldwin-Wallace College.  Brianne Dietrich grabbed two PSAC qualifying marks, with her fourth place finish in the 100 meter dash (12.59 seconds) and first place in the Long Jump (5.21 meters).  The long distance crew for the Men’s team performed well in the 10,000 meter run with Dustin Thomas (2nd, 31:55.06), Bart Eckel (3rd, 32:18.92) and Sean Naderer (4th, 32:40.63) all earning PSAC qualifying times.

Abbey Mackessy Ties Record with Seven Goals in 14-13 Win at East Stroudsburg

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – Abbey Mackessy tied the school record with seven goals and added an assist to lead Edinboro to a 14-13 win at East Stroudsburg in a PSAC lacrosse match on Saturday afternoon.   The win boosted the Fighting Scots to 7-9 overall and 2-8 in the PSAC, the most PSAC victories in school history.  The Warrors are now 4-11 and 2-8, respectively.

Scott Anderson Posts Best Time in PSAC in 5000 at Mt. Sac Relays

WALNUT, Cal. (April 20, 2012) – Edinboro University junior Scott Anderson turned in the top time in the PSAC in the 5000-meter run while competing in the 54th Annual Mt. Sac Relays on Friday night.  Anderson turned in a time of 14:04.34 while competing in the University/College Division against some of the top runners in the country.  That time was good for tenth in the event, and is also an NCAA provisional qualifying time.  David Rooney of McNeese State was the top finisher with a time of 13:53.04.  Twenty-nine runners competed in the event.

EDINBORO, Pa. – The Edinboro University Student Athlete Advisory Committee hosted the Fourth Annual Student-Athlete Auction on Wednesday, April 18.  The event featured 27 individuals auctioned off, including Director of Athletics Bruce Baumgartner.  All proceeds raised benefited the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Anderson Highlights Several Strong Performances at Bison Outdoor Classic

LEWISBURG, Pa. (April 14, 2012)—While some of the Edinboro track & field team was competing in Slippery Rock, some of coach Doug Watts’ top performers were competing in the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic.    Two turned in outstanding performances.  Scott Anderson posted a national qualifying time in the 1500-meter run, finishing fifth in the event with a time of 3:48.80.  That is good for the fourth-fastest time in Division II.  Kacey Gibson finished with an NCAA provisional time in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 36:35.24.  Finally, Bryan Deibel placed 13th in the 5,000-meter run.  His time was 14:38.94, just missing out on a national qualifying time.

Men's Tennis Team Clinches PSAC Playoff Berth Despite Loss to Kutztown

KUTZTOWN, Pa.(April 14, 2012) – The Edinboro men’s tennis team lost the second of its two matches on a swing to the east on Saturday, suffering a 9-0 loss at Kutzown.  The defeat dropped the Fighting Scots to 10-12, while the Golden Bears improved to 2-9.  However, Edinboro still clinched the fourth and final spot in the upcoming PSAC Tournament with a 2-3 league mark.  The Fighting Scots are the number four seed.  Bloomsburg is the number one seed at 5-0, with Kutztown second (4-1) and Millersville third (2-3).

Seven Athletes Earn PSAC Track & Field Championship Qualifications

(April 14, 2012) – The Edinboro Men’s and Women’s Track teams competed today in the Dave Labor Invitational hosted on the campus of Slippery Rock University.  Seven total athletes earned a PSAC Track and Field Championship qualifying mark through performances today, five of which came from the Women’s team.  Six Fighting Scots also took first place in events, with two from the Men and four from the Women.

Boro Posts Dramatic Doubleheader Sweep of Slippery Rock
EDINBORO, Pa. (April 14, 2012) – The Fighting Scots softball team celebrated Senior Day in style by pulling off a doubleheader sweep of Slippery Rock under rainy conditions Saturday. Edinboro staged a come-from-behind rally in its last at-bat for a 7-6 game one victory before registering a 6-2 win in the nightcap.
With the victories, Edinboro moves back to .500 overall on the season at 16-16 and also improves to 6-8 in the PSAC West. Slippery Rock falls to 13-16 and 2-10.

Ninth-Ranked West Chester beats Edinboro, 18-8

(April 14, 2012) – The Fighting Scots took to the road to face the PSAC-leading West Chester Golden Rams on Saturday afternoon, and fell by a final score of 18-8.  The loss dropped the Fighting Scots to 5-8 on the year and 1-7 in the PSAC.  The Golden Rams, ranked ninth in the latest Division II rankings, improved to 10-1 overall and 7-1 in the PSAC.

Paternostro Second in Decathlon; Dietrich Ninth in Heptathlon

KUTZTOWN, Pa. (April 13, 2012) – Edinboro’s Steve Paternostro finished second in the decathlon at the Mondscheim Multi’s on Friday at Kutztown University.  The event took place on Thursday and Friday.  He would fall just 16 points shy of Moravian’s Nicco Dalpiaz, who took first place.  Dalpiaz finished with 6,211 points while Paternostro ended with 6,195 points.  Paternostro won the 400-meter run.

                On the women’s side, Stephanie Smigiera was leading the heptathlon on Thursday when she reinjured her leg in the long jump and was pulled from the competition.  Brianne Dietrich would finish ninth with 3,521 points.  However, she would have place much higher but fell in the 100-meter hurdles and did not finish, ending with zero points.  She won the 200-meters and was second in the triple jump.

MILLERSVILLE, Pa.(April 13, 2012) – The Edinboro men’s tennis team lost the first of its two matches on a swing to the east on Friday afternoon, suffering a narrow 5-4 loss at Millersville.  The defeat dropped the Fighting Scots to 10-11, while the Marauders improved to 2-9.  Millersville was able to rally for the win with four wins in singles play.  The Fighting Scots play at Kutztown on Saturday.

ELKINS, WV -- The Edinboro women's tennis team came within a win of snapping a seven-match losing skid on Friday afternoon before falling at Davis & Elkins, 5-4.  The loss dropped the Fighting Scots to 6-16, while the Senators improved to 6-12. EDINBORO, Pa. -- The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference today announced the PSAC Winter Top Ten Award winners for 2011-12, with Edinboro’s Tabitha Bemis (Fair Oaks, PA/Quaker Valley) among the five women selected.  The PSAC Top Ten recognizes five men and five women in the spring, winter and fall for excellence in the classroom and on the playing field.  The nominees must have a minimum of a 3.50 cumulative grade point average.  Voting is conducted among the PSAC’s sports information directors.

Raleigh, NC (March 30-31, 2012) – The Edinboro women’s 4x800 meter relay team finished 8th overall with a time of 9:32.27 on Saturday afternoon in Raleigh, North Carolina.  Tabitha Bemis also took to the track for the Fighting Scots as she finished 12th overall in the finals of the 100m hurdles event with a time 14.51. The Edinboro Track and Field teams were competing this weekend in the Raleigh Relays on the campus of North Carolina State University.

Raleigh, NC (March 30-31, 2012) – The Men's Track and Field team saw Scott Anderson and Ben Hahn set two NCAA provisional marks today at the Raleigh Relays hosted on the campus of North Carolina State, both coming in the 5,000m run section II race.  Anderson finished in fifth place with a time of 14:11.09, setting a new personal record and the second fast time in DII this year. Hahn took 17th and timed at 14:32.57.

Women's Lacrosse Team Ends Southern Swing with 15-11 Loss at Lenoir-Rhyne

HICKORY, NC (March 17, 2012) – The Edinboro women’s lacrosse team’s attempt at a first-ever 3-0 start came up just short on Saturday afternoon as the Fighting Scots lost 15-11 at Lenoir-Rhyne.  The loss dropped Edinboro to 2-1 and concluded the three-game southern swing, while the Bears improved to 8-2 with their seventh straight win.

Honeycutt Defeats Wilps, Headed to National Championship Finals at 197 lbs.

LOUIS, Mo. – Senior Chris Honeycutt, seeded second, will look to become Edinboro’s fifth NCAA Division I national champion on Saturday night.  Honeycutt earned his ticket to the finals with a 6-3 decision in tiebreaker over EWL rival Matt Wilps of Pittsburgh in Friday night’s 197 lb. semifinal at the NCAA Division I Wrestling National Championships at the Scottrade Center, avenging his lone loss of the year.  Edinboro is in a tie for 12th place.

Andy Garbarino Named First Team All-American

            EDINBORO, Pa. – The Edinboro men’s and women’s wheelchair basketball teams wrapped up the 2011-12 season this past weekend, competing in the 35th Annual National Intercollegiate Wheelchair Basketball Tournament at the University of Illinois.  Both teams went 0-2 in the event, leaving the men with a final record of 4-26 and the women with a 2-26 record.

The men finished seventh at the NIWBT and the women fourth.

(April 30, 2011) -- The Edinboro University Athletic Hall of Fame celebrated its 30th year with the induction of six new members on Saturday night.  The six new members swelled the Edinboro Hall of Fame membership to 202 inductees.  The Class of 2011 was formally inducted at the 30th Annual Hall of Fame Awards Ceremony at McComb Fieldhouse.
