Edinboro Dominates in Overtime for 87-72 Win at Pitt-Johnstown

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – Anthony Coleman and Jaymon Mason scored six points apiece as the Edinboro men's basketball team outscored Pitt-Johnstown 15-0 in overtime for an 87-72 win at the UPJ Sports Center on Wednesday night. The victory snapped a two-game losing streak as the Fighting Scots improved to 12-7 overall and 9-6 in the PSAC West. Pitt-Johnstown dropped to 10-10 and 8-8, respectively.

After losing three games in the final seconds in the last three weeks, the Fighting Scots found themselves in a potentially similar situation late in the tight game. Regulation featured 17 ties and 19 lead changes.

Edinboro took its largest lead of regulation at 60-53 with just over eight minutes remaining. UPJ would go on an 11-2 run to retake the lead at 64-62, but Coleman would knot the contest at 64-all with a pair of free throws with 4:45 remaining.

The rest of regulation featured the Mountain Cats taking a two-point lead and Edinboro tying the game. Liggins tied the game at 70-70 on a drive, thanks to a great blockout by offensive tackle-turned-forward Trey Staunch, with 41 seconds left. Edinboro got a stop on defense and Mason made two free throws with eight seconds left for a 72-70 lead.

In a scene seen all too often by head coach Pat Cleary in recent games, Dale Clancy hit a jumper in the paint with 0.2 seconds showing. Fortunately, that basket only tied the game.

That would be Pitt-Johnstown's last basket. The Mountain Cats went 0-for-9 from the floor in the overtime period. The first miss led to a scramble for the rebound at the top of the key. Coleman corralled the ball and went in uncontested for a layup and a 74-72 lead.

That basket jumpstarted the Fighting Scots. Mason's 3-pointer made it 77-72, and Coleman would boost the lead to seven on a drive. Liggins' drive to the hoop made it 81-72, and Michael Sims Jr. made one of two free throws with 1:32 to play for a 10-point lead at 82-72. Coleman hit two more free throws and Mason wrapped up the win with a long three from the right wing.

The Big 3 again came through for Edinboro, accounting for 70 points. Liggins, the leading scorer in the PSAC, scored 29 points and added a career-high 16 rebounds for his 12 double-double of the season. He made 12-of-18 field goals, including a 3-pointer, and was 4-of-5 at the line while playing all 45 minutes.

Mason was held to just four points in the first half, but scored 21 points in the second half and overtime to finish with 25 points. He made 9-of-16 field goals, including two 3's, and was 5-for-5 at the line, adding five rebounds.

Coleman sat out all but the first four minutes of the first half with two fouls, but also enjoyed a big second half, accounting for 14 of his 16 points. He was 6-of-12 from the floor, 4-of-4 at the line, and had five rebounds.

Cleary received strong play from the bench, as well. Staunch contributed eight points and four rebounds, while Sims played a season-high 22 minutes and helped slow Clancy down.

Clancy would finish with 24 points, but Edinboro limited Isaac Vescovi, the sixth-leading scorer in the PSAC, to just eight points. Josh Wise added 17 points and Levi Masua 13 and nine rebounds.

Edinboro shot 50.8 percent for the game (33-of-65), including 5-of-16 3-pointers, and went 16-of-19 at the line. UPJ ended at 35.5 percent (27-of-76), going 8-for-27 from beyond the arc, and was 10-of-13 at the line.  Edinboro held a 44-37 rebounding lead.

The Fighting Scots return home following three straight road games to host California(Pa.) on Saturday, February 3. Tipoff is at 3 p.m. It will mark the first home game with the students in session since November 19.
