Mason Records First 40-Point Game Since 2001 in 100-85 Defeat at Pitt-Johnstown

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (February 4, 2017) – Redshirt junior guard Jaymon Mason reached another career milestone Saturday scoring 40 points, while junior guard/forward Maceo Baston had a career-high 22 points as Edinboro fell at Pitt-Johnstown in a high-scoring affair, 100-85. Despite Mason recording the first 40-point game at Edinboro in 16 years, the defeat moved the Fighting Scots to 6-14 overall and 4-12 in the PSAC West. The Mountain Cats improved to 14-9 and 9-8, respectively.

Mason, who now has nine games with at least 30 points this season, became the first Fighting Scot to tally a 40-point game since Blake Johnson netted 43 points against Shippensburg on February 27, 2001. The 6'3" guard also passed former teammate Henri Wade-Chatman into a tie with Edwin Wright for eighth on the Edinboro all-time career scoring list with 1,420 points. He shot 16-for-26 for the game, making 4-of-9 3-pointers and shooting 4-for-5 from the free throw line.

Head coach Pat Cleary played with seven players for the third straight game due to a string of injuries to his roster.

Maceo Baston
Baston, who has started the last three games in place of Mikael Anderson, made the most of his third career start at Edinboro, notching his first 20-point game as a Fighting Scot and leading the team with seven rebounds. The transfer from Southwestern Community College made 7-of-11 shots from the floor, while posting a perfect 8-for-8 from the charity stripe.

After being held to a season-low 29.1 field goal percentage in their last contest at California (Pa.) last Saturday, Edinboro shot a season-best 54.2 percent (32-for-59) against UPJ. The Mountain Cats, however, also posted season highs in shooting Saturday with a 66.1 field goal percentage (39-for-59), including a 17-for-30 showing from 3-point range and a 70.0 second-half field goal percentage (21-for-30). Jake Laravie shot 11-for-13 from behind the arc for UPJ on his way to a career-high 33 points with 10 assists, while Isaac Vescovi had a career-high 26 points, making 11-of-14 shots from the floor.

Edinboro and Pitt-Johnstown each got off to a hot start, with the Fighting Scots shooting 57.1 percent (16-for-28) in the first half and the Mountain Cats shooting 62.1 percent (18-for-29). Most of UPJ's shots in the opening period came from behind the arc, as they made 10-of-19 from 3-point range, with Laravie making 7-of-9 3-pointers for 21 first-half points. Edinboro shot 1-for-5 from 3-point range in the first half. The Boro opened the game making eight of their first 11 shots, while UPJ made their first nine shots that resulted in a 22-18 UPJ lead with 13:34 left in the first half. The Mountain Cats used a 12-2 run to widen the gap to 32-20 with 8:54 before halftime and led by as much as 13 points before intermission. Jaymon Mason connected on 8-of-11 shots in the first session for 18 points, with his jumper with 13 seconds left cutting the Mountain Cats' lead to 49-39 at halftime.

The Fighting Scots opened the second half making their first four 3-point attempts, with the last one by Mike Beck trimming UPJ's lead to 62-59 with 13:25 to play. It would be as close as they would come, however, as the Mountain Cats responded with a 16-7 run, capped off by triples from Vescovi, Dale Clancy and Laravie, to bring their lead up to 12 at 78-66 with 7:19 remaining. Sheldon Brogdon answered with a three to cut UPJ's lead to nine with 6:49 to play, but the Mountain Cats utilized an 8-2 run to go back up by double digits, and would maintain a double-digit lead for the rest of the contest. UPJ extended its lead to as much as 19 points at 98-79 when Laravie hit his final 3-pointer with 1:34 to go.

Brogdon and Beck each finished with eight points for the Fighting Scots, while Jon Girvin posted five points with four rebounds. Clancy had 14 points, 11 assists and six rebounds for the Mountain Cats, while AJ Leahey had 13 points, seven assists and five boards.
