Flynn Signs Mulligan, Willis to NLI's

EDINBORO, Pa. – Edinboro University wrestling coach Tim Flynn has announced the signing of two future Fighting Scots to NLI's. Cody Mulligan, a standout at nearby Saegertown (Pa.) High School, and Gaige Willis of Pymatuning Valley (Oh.) High School, will join the Fighting Scots in 2018.

Both Mulligan and Willis earned state titles a year ago, Mulligan at 182 lbs. and Willis at 195 lbs. Flynn anticipates both moving up eventually, with Mulligan competing for Edinboro at 197 lbs. and Gaige at heavyweight. Mulligan is ranked sixth by InterMat at 182 lbs.

"We like them both, and at weights that we are going to need in the future" he exclaimed. "Both are studs. They both are state champions. It's a really good start to our recruiting, for sure. We're excited to have them."

Mulligan is a two-time PIAA placewinner and three-time state qualifier who captured the Class AA state title at 182 lbs. a year ago while competing for Saegertown High School and head coach Jim Mulligan, his father. He ended the year with a 46-3 record with 17 falls after winning a 6-0 decision over Dominic Fundy of Bethlehem-Center in the finals. He was named the District 10 Wrestler of the Year.

He added to his resume after that with a second place finish at the 2017 FloNationals, reaching the finals before dropping a 5-2 decision to Jelani Embree of Michigan. He added the Super32 Challenge championship, as well.

As a sophomore, Mulligan placed for the first time at the PIAA Championships, coming in sixth while competing at 170 lbs. He concluded the season at 41-7, reaching the semifinals with a pair of wins before dropping a 3-1 decision to Anthony Walters of Westmont Hilltop. He medical forfeited his next two matches to take sixth place.

Mulligan qualified for the state championships for the first time in 2015 as a freshman while competing at 160 lbs. He ended the year with a 41-8 record while going 1-2 in his first trip to states.

Mulligan enters his senior season with a 128-18 career record. He has won three section championships, three District 10 titles, and has two Northwest Region titles to his credit, along with a second place as a freshman.

Willis is a three-time OHSAA Division III placewinner, capturing the state title as a junior at 195 lbs. He became Pymatuning Valley's first state titlist thanks to a 3-1 decision over Logan Hall of Massillon Tuslaw. He earlier won his first district championship and second sectional title prior to bringing home the state championship. Willis would finish the season with a 47-0 record.

As a sophomore, Willis finished as the runner-up at 182 lbs. at the state championships. He won three bouts before dropping a 7-1 decision to James Handwork of Rocky River Lutheran West. He ended the season with a 46-4 record, placing at the district tournament and second at the sectional.

Willis became Pymatuning Valley's first state qualifier as a freshman thanks to an eighth place showing at 170 lbs. That capped a 43-14 season. He won the sectional tournament and finished fourth at the districts.

Willis enters his senior season with a 136-18 record with 47 straight victories. He has one district title and two sectional to his credit.
