Bench Scoring and Stifling Defense Boosts Fighting Scots to Seventh Straight Win With 78-38 Victory Over Cheyney

EDINBORO, Pa. – The Edinboro University women's basketball team utilized stifling defense and outstanding play off the bench to record their seventh straight victory with a 78-38 win over visiting Cheyney on Saturday afternoon at McComb Fieldhouse. With the win, the Fighting Scots improved to 7-2 overall and 5-0 in the PSAC West while the Wolves remain winless at 0-5 overall and 0-5 in the PSAC East. The win is also the 12th straight at home for the Fighting Scots dating back to last season.
 
The 38 points represented the lowest total allowed by the Fighting Scots since a 76-33 win over Saint Augustine's last season.
 
Edinboro cruised to Saturday's victory, leading from horn-to-horn, thanks in large part to points off turnovers and the performances off the bench. The Fighting Scots forced Cheyney into a season-high 34 turnovers and cashed those miscues in for 37 points.
 
Redshirt-sophomore Jontay Walton led an Edinboro bench that totaled 43 points in the contest. Walton led all scorers finished with a season-high 14 points on 4-of-7 shooting. The 5'5'' guard also picked up a season-high five steals and dished out three assists in 17 minutes of action. Freshman Jade Favre dropped in eight points in 12 minutes off the bench. Sophomore Allison Thompson totaled six points and four rebounds while fellow sophomore Cheniya Sharpe had five points and five boards in reserve.
 
The Edinboro defense held the Wolves to just 30.0 pct. (15-of-50) shooting from the field and 3-o-15 from beyond the arc. The Fighting Scots shot 40.9 pct. (27-of-66) from the floor and 6-of-17 from deep.

Edinboro won the battle of the boards, 44-37, thanks to a season-high 16 rebounds from junior Ciara Rosten. Rosten added 10 points to tally her first double-double of the season. Senior Katie Fischer finished with eight points and four steals while sophomore Michelle Jahn totaled seven points.
 
The Fighting Scots saw a 13-7 first quarter lead blossom into a 34-19 halftime cushion. Edinboro blew the game open in the third quarter, holding Cheyney to just five points while dropping in 21 themselves. The Edinboro lead grew to as many as 46 points off a Sharpe layup with 3:27 remaining.

 
Briana Hedgepeth a pair of double digit scorers for Cheyney, totaling 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting. Marlon Herring added 11 points. The Fighting Scots held Cheyney's second leading scorer, TaKayla Ellis, to just 3 points on 1-of-11 shooting and forced her into eight turnovers.

The Fighting Scots return to action on Saturday, December 17, making the trek to West Virginia to face Salem International at 2 p.m. Edinboro returns to McComb on Monday, December 19, for a final game before Christmas break, hosting Fairmont State at 2 p.m.
