Brogdon Scores 30 Points, Girvin Grabs 11 Boards in 85-81 Win Over Cheyney

EDINBORO, Pa. (December 10, 2016) – Redshirt senior guard Sheldon Brogdon gathered 30 points with seven 3-pointers, while newcomer and redshirt junior forward Jon Girvin grabbed 11 rebounds with eight points to help Edinboro to an 85-81 PSAC crossover win over Cheyney Saturday afternoon in McComb Fieldhouse. The Fighting Scots snapped a six-game losing streak, their longest since 1985-86, to enter winter break with a 3-6 overall record and 1-4 in the PSAC West. The Wolves dropped to 1-8 with a 1-4 PSAC East mark.

Brogdon, in his first game as a starter this season, matched his career high by scoring seven of Edinboro's nine 3-pointers and nearly matched his career high after scoring 31 points against Daemen on November 23. It also marked the third straight game that an Edinboro player scored 30 or more points, with redshirt junior guard Jaymon Mason doing the honors in the Fighting Scots' previous two contests.

Girvin, a defensive end on the football team who joined the team on Monday, made his home Fighting Scots basketball debut Saturday, entering the game with just over five minutes left in the first half. His eight points were the first of his career, all of which came on free throws. He had a pair of rebounds in four minutes of action in his first career game Wednesday at Notre Dame (Ohio). Senior forward Mikael Anderson added with 17 markers on the afternoon, while Mason finished with 14 points and dished out six assists.

The Fighting Scots held an 82-75 lead with 30 seconds to play before Cheyney hit back-to-back 3-pointers to pull to within one point with 17 ticks remaining. Zahir Stewart went to the line for a four-point play attempt with 24 seconds left after hitting a three on a Girvin foul. He missed the free throw, which Andre Allen rebounded and fed to Khaalis Carter, who drilled the three. Following an Edinboro timeout, Girvin hit a free throw after an intentional foul to make it 83-81 with 14 seconds remaining. On Cheyney's last possession, Stewart looked to attempt a go-ahead 3-pointer with four seconds left, but stepped out of bounds. Brogdon was then fouled and hit both his free throws to put the game away for good.

Edinboro used a 9-0 run to close out the first half to take a 37-30 lead at the break. Edinboro connected on 6-of-9 3-point attempts in the first half, while Cheyney went 0-for-5 from 3-point range. Brogdon drilled 5-of-7 3-point attempts in the opening half for 18 points, while Anderson netted ten points in the first 20 minutes. Girvin collected four of his boards in the final 3:17 of the half to help aid the run.

The Fighting Scots shot 42.6 percent from the floor (26-for-61) and 9-for-23 from 3-point range. Cheyney shot 42.3 percent from the field (30-for-71) and 4-for-14 from behind the arc. The Wolves led, 44-15, in bench points and 48-28 in points in the paint.

Amir Boney led Cheyney with 23 points, along with nine rebounds. Stewart had 14 points, while Rafiq Marshall had 11 markers.

Edinboro returns to the hardwood on Friday, December 30, hosting PSAC West-opponent California (Pa.) at 7:30 p.m. in McComb Fieldhouse.
