EDINBORO, Pa. (November 21, 2015) – Redshirt sophomore
Jaymon Mason scored a career-high 39 points on Saturday, but it was not enough to pull the Edinboro University men's basketball team to a win, as they fell to Kutztown, 92-82, in McComb Fieldhouse. The Golden Bears improved to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the PSAC East, while the Fighting Scots dropped to 1-1 overall and in the PSAC West.
The game consisted of 49 combined personal fouls from both teams, with Edinboro having 28 personal fouls. There were 22 lead changes and the game was tied 15 times. Edinboro led by as much as seven points with 9:04 to go in the first half. Edinboro shot 40.9% (27-for-66) from the field while Kutztown finished the day shooting 50.8% (30-59). Edinboro out-rebounded the Golden Bears, 42-35. Kutztown was held to under 100 points for the first time this season.
The first half was an evenly-matched affair, with Kutztown holding a slim 40-39 heading into the locker room. Mason started the game red hot, making three 3-pointers and grabbing 14 points within the first seven minutes. Mason had 24 points to end the first half. Edinboro shot 43.3% (13-for-30) from the field in the opening half to Kutztown's 40.6% (13-for-32).
The game remained the same in the second half, with each team exchanging leads. A layup and an and-one by senior guard
Henri Wade-Chatman put Edinboro in the lead, 74-73, with 6:18 remaining in the game. However, this would be the last time the Fighting Scots would hold a lead, as the Golden Bears responded with an 11-2 run, going up, 84-76 with 2:27 left. Wade-Chatman provided a spark for an Edinboro comeback rally by hitting two free throws and then stealing the ball away from Ethan Ridgeway and netting a fast-break layup to draw Edinboro within four with 1:59 remaining.
Trailing, 85-80, with 1:16 left, Mason was unable to convert on a well-read three-point attempt, and Ridgeway grabbed the board for Kutztown, leaving Edinboro no choice but to intentional foul him and send him to the line. All of the Golden Bears' remaining points were converted free throws as Kutztown pulled away with a 92-82 win.
The Fighting Scots shot 38.9% (14-for-36) in second-half field goals while the Golden Bears posted a 63.0% (17-for-27) field goal percentage in the second half.
Mason ended the game with 39 points and nine rebounds, going a perfect 14-for-14 from the charity stripe. Mason broke his career high of 25 points that he set against Millersville on December 14 of last year. Senior center
Tommy Scales was the team's second leading scorer with 17 points while posting nine boards. Wade-Chatman totaled 13 points and had three steals and two assists.
The Fighting Scots are right back in action on Sunday, November 22 with a home match against Mansfield at 3:00 p.m. in McComb Fieldhouse.
