(May 1, 2014) – The Edinboro softball team fell to West Chester by a score of 10-1 in the opening round of the 2014 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championship on Thursday evening at Veterans Park in Quakertown, PA. The Fighting Scots will now take on Indiana (Pa.) in an elimination game later tonight at 9:30 p.m. Edinboro dropped to 17-23-1 with the loss, while the Golden Rams improved to 35-17.
West Chester came into the contest as the top seed from the Eastern Division after compiling a 19-9 mark in the conference. The Golden Rams also sit third in the latest NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Rankings.
Walks plagued the Fighting Scots throughout the game, as six of West Chester's 10 runs were the result of free passes. The Edinboro pitching staff allowed a total of eight walks for the game in addition to one hit batsman.
The Golden Rams jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run homerun by Kelly Anderson and an RBI single from Laura Altenburger. The Golden Rams tacked on three runs in the bottom of the second and four more scores in the third to gain a 10-0 advantage.
Shelby Proctor got the Fighting Scots on the board in the top of the fourth with an RBI groundout, scoring
Brooke Callaghan and cutting the West Chester lead to 10-1. Callaghan led off the frame with a double to right-center field.
That run proved to be the only score of the game for Edinboro, as the Golden Rams held on for a 10-1 victory in five innings.
The Fighting Scots finished with three base hits, including one from Callaghan (1-for-2), and one hit apiece from
Brenna Cosgrove (1-for-2) and
Heather Tighe (1-for-3).
Kalet Lenart (9-10) suffered the loss for Edinboro, allowing five runs on three hits. Lenart also struck out two batters and walked three.
Kim Murl (17-7) earned the victory in the circle, allowing one run on three hits in four innings of work with two strikeouts and a walk.
