No. 19 Kutztown Controls Match, Eliminates Edinboro 2-0 in PSAC Quarterfinals

KUTZTOWN, Pa. (November 4, 2014) - The Edinboro women's soccer team lost 2-0 at No. 19 Kutztown on Tuesday afternoon in the PSAC Quarterfinals. The Golden Bears avenged a 2-1 loss from a week ago to the Fighting Scots. Edinboro falls to 10-7-2 overall while Kutztown is now 13-4-0 on the season.

This was the fifth consecutive PSAC Tournament appearance for the Fighting Scots. They were seeking their first conference tournament victory since a 2-1 win against Kutztown in 2012.

Kutztown had 21 of the first 23 shots in the game and controlled the play throughout most of the game. Logan Kramer had the first good chance of the game in the 11th minute. Her shot sailed just high of the Edinboro goal.

The Golden Bears had another chance shortly after in the 17th minute. Dana Wong brought the ball up the right side and centered it to Sam Costello. Meghan Kelly met Costello at the point of the shot to prevent a goal.

Edinboro's first chance came two minutes later. Alex Brown had an opening and tapped it by the Kutztown goalie Deanna Messner but two Golden Bear defenders slid in to prevent the goal.

Kelly kept another shot out of the net in the 24th minute. Kutztown's Costello slipped in the box after having possession but the ball wound up back at her feet as she was rising to the ground. She fired a shot that was deflected away by Kelly.

Kutztown's Mariah Dimm sent a strong shot from the top of the box aimed for the top left corner in the 29th minute but Kelly made an acrobatic diving save to punch the ball over the net.

A hard shot by Brooke May was kept out of the net by Kelly but the rebound went to the foot of Costello who scored her 10th goal of the season in the 34th minute to give the Golden Bears a 1-0 lead.

Sam Busillo made a strong run near the end of the 38th minute to give Kutztown a chance at a second goal before halftime but her shot across the ground was corralled by Kelly.
Kelly's superb performance in the first half kept the Fighting Scots in the game despite the Golden Bears' 13-1 shot advantage.

Kutztown put the nail in the coffin in the 60th minute. Mariah Dimm put a corner kick into a large crowd in the box and Diana Malanga headed the ball into the right side of the net to make it 2-0 with less than 30 minutes to play.

Edinboro's Ashley Mutkus created a good chance in the 69th minute but the shot went over the crossbar. Brown had a similar result two minutes later when her chance went high.
Kutztown finished with 22 shots with 11 on net compared to Edinboro's eight shots and two on goal.

Kelly recorded a season-high nine saves, tying the second-most in her career. The senior goalkeeper recorded ten saves on October 27, 2012 against Mansfield.

Messner recorded her eighth shutout of the season for Kutztown. The freshman goalkeeper made one save while blanking the Scots.

Edinboro now waits to hear its NCAA Tournament fate. The Fighting Scots are pursuing their fourth straight NCAA Tournament appearance. They were recently ranked fourth in the Atlantic Region in the NSCAA Atlantic Regional rankings while receiving a vote in the NSCAA Top 25. The NCAA announces the field of 48 on Sunday, November 9.
