Final Brackets Final PSAC Team Standings
EDINBORO, Pa. (Dec. 7, 2013) – The Edinboro wrestling team turned in a dominating performance on Saturday to come away with its third straight title in the 71st Annual PSAC Wrestling Championships. The Fighting Scots crowned six champions while hosting the event at McComb Fieldhouse, ending the day with 172.5 points. It marked the eighth title in the last nine years and 14th overall for head coach
Tim Flynn.
Bloomsburg was second with 135 points, and Lock Haven was third with 102 points. Clarion had 92 points to edge Mercyhurst (90 points) for fourth place. A total of 12 teams competed in the championships.
Edinboro set a PSAC record with six straight champions to start the finals, with nine of ten Boro wrestlers reahing the finals.
Kory Mines picked up his first PSAC title at 125 lbs. with an 8-2 decision over Pitt-Johnstown's Dave Fogle. He boosted his record to 9-2.
A.J. Schopp,
Mitchell Port, and
Dave Habat followed with wins at 133, 141 and 149 lbs., respectively, all becoming three time champions.
Schopp won by fall at 1:59 over Clarion's Sam Sherlock, as the redshirt junior pinned all four of his opponents. The performance earned him Outstanding Wrestler honors. While improving to 11-0, Schopp boosted his career falls total to 45, tied for second place all-time. He also has 83 career wins, which is tied for 30
th.
Port (7-0) won by technical fall over Matt Rappo of Bloomsburg, 16-1 (5:00), and Habat (12-1) held off Bryce Busler of Bloomsburg, claiming a 5-3 decision. Port won three times, twice vby fall and once by technical fall.
Johnny Greisheimer (7-4) rallied for an exciting 9-8 decision over Clarion's Austin Matthews at 157 lbs. in a battle of one and two seeds. A wild third period saw Greisheimer rally from a 6-4 deficit with an escape and takedown, only to fall behind 8-7 on a Matthews reversal. A late escape by Greisheimer tied it at 8-8, and Greisheimer owned a 1:51 advantage in riding time for the winning point.
Kasey Burnett-Davis made it six straight Edinboro wins with a 9-4 upset of top-seeded Jake Kemerer of Lock Haven at 165 lbs. Burnett-Davis was a replacement starter for the Fighting Scots and was unseeded. He was easily the story of the day for the Fighting Scots after competing at 141 lbs. last year, then losing out to Greisheimer for the starting job at 157 lbs. recently. He would take Kemerer down four times in the final, and beat the number and two seeded wrestlers during the day. The redshirt junior is now 7-2.
Edinboro's run of champions came to an end at 174 lbs., as Mike Dessino earned his third PSAC crown with a fall over Mercyhurst's August Mizia at 2:19.
Zach Towers, however, turned in a third place performance for the Scots. After taking the mat for the first officially as a Fighting Scot against Iowa on Thursday, the redshirt freshman won four of five matches, upsetting second-seeded Ryan Darch of Clarion twice. He won by major decision over Adam Mackie of lock Haven, the fourth seed, by a 16-3 score.
Travis McKillop became UPJ's first PSAC titlist when he won the 184 lb. championship with a win by medical forfeit over
Vic Avery. Avery had not wrestled since suffering an injury in his first match of the year at the Michigan State Open. He won a pair of major decisions before decided not to push it as he continues to rehabilitate.
Bloomsburg would deny Edinboro a chance to tie the PSAC record for individual champions with wins in the final two matches. Richard Perry and Justin Grant successfully defended their crowns and 197 lbs. and heavyweight, respectively. Perry won a 7-2 decision over Vince Pickett (6-3) at 197 lbs. Pickett, the third seed, reached the finals with an 8-3 upset of second-seeded Phil Sprenkle of Lock Haven.
Grant and
Ernest James (7-3) then renewed their rivalry, with Grant prevailing 2-1 on riding time. After a scoreless first period, the two exchanged escapes the next two periods, but Grant gained a riding time advantage of 1:13 in the exchange.
