Game Notes: Fighting Scots Look to Extend Streak Over Lock Haven

GAME NOTES (.pdf) |   VIDEO   |   AUDIO

The Game Story
-Edinboro has opened the season with back-to-back losses to nationally-ranked teams, falling 30-14 at then 19th-ranked Bloomsburg, followed by a 24-14 loss to sixth-ranked California(Pa.) in both the home opener and PSAC West lidlifter last Saturday.  It marks the first time the Fighting Scots have started 0-2 since 2000.  In addition, the loss in the home opener was the first since California(Pa.) beat the Scots in 2008.

-Lock Haven will be playing its home opener after starting the season with three straight road games.  The Bald Eagles are 0-3 with losses at Fordham, East Stroudsburg and Indiana(Pa.).  Coach John Allen's team is looking for its first points in 2012, having been outscored 128-0.

-Edinboro is in its seventh season under head coach Scott Browning.  The former long-time Boro assistant has led the Fighting Scots to a 45-25 record during that period, and tied mentor Tom Hollman for the most wins by a coach in his first six seasons.  A year ago Edinboro finished with a 7-4 record for the second straight season.

-The Fighting Scots were picked to finish fourth in the PSAC West preseason poll, while Lock Haven was chosen eighth.

-Edinboro has won the last 11 meetings with the Bald Eagles, including a 42-7 decision a year ago at Sox Harrison Stadium.  In addition, the Fighting Scots have won in their last five trips to Hubert Jack Stadium.  The last win for Lock Haven came in 2000, a 20-16 triumph at Hubert Jack Stadium.  Overall, Edinboro holds a 39-14-1 lead in the series.

-Lock Haven seeks an end to a 45-game losing streak, the longest in PSAC history.  In fact, a loss to the Fighting Scots would tie the Division II record for consecutive losses, held by Minnesota-Morris (1998-2003).  The Bald Eagles' last win came on November 10, 2007, a 17-14 triumph in overtime over Clarion.

-Edinboro returns six starters on offense and six on defense.  The offense is led by second team All-PSAC quarterback Cody Harris, who begins his third year as a starter.  Senior tight end Shawn Walker was a second team All-PSAC West pick in 2010.  Defensively, junior James Jackson was a 2011 first team All-PSAC West selection at cornerback and senior Branden Williams earned the same honor in 2008 and '09.  Jackson is a third team Beyond Sports Network preseason All-American.

-Edinboro faces an ambitious 2012 schedule.  The PSAC crossover slate has the Fighting Scots facing the top three teams from last year in the Eastern Division in Kutztown, Bloomsburg and LIU Post.  The three combined to go 27-8.  Throw in the usual Western Division rivals such as preseason favorites California(Pa.) and Indiana(Pa.), plus local rivals Gannon and Mercyhurst, and Edinboro has its work cut out in 2012.

The All-Time Series
-Edinboro leads 39-14-1
Edinboro has won the last 11 meetings with the Bald Eagles, including a 42-7 decision a year ago at Sox Harrison Stadium.  In addition, the Fighting Scots have won in their last five trips to Hubert Jack Stadium.  The last win for Lock Haven came in 2000, a 20-16 triumph at Hubert Jack Stadium.

The Last Meeting
-2011 -- Edinboro 42, Lock Haven 7
The Fighting Scots piled up 562 yards, most of that through the air, to defeat the Bald Eagles.  Cody Harris threw for a career-high 398 yards, completing 27 of 33 passes with 4 TDs, and Ty Stoldt added a 74-yard touchdown pass.  David Bostic was the main benefactor, setting school records for receptions in a game (13) and yards receiving in a game (255), with touchdowns of 19, 41 and 74 yards.  Marcus Johnson added a 71-yard touchdown catch.  The Boro defense intercepted three passes.  Brandon Brader was a bright spot for the Bald Eagles with 168 yards on 33 carries.  (For complete game statistics see page 4)

The Coaches
-Scott Browning (Ohio State '81)  took over as Edinboro's 13th head coach on January 5, 2006, and in his first six seasons he tied the record for most wins by a coach during that period.  Browning is now in his seventh season with a 45-25 record, tying former mentor Tom Hollman for most wins in the first six seasons.  He was certainly no stranger to Fighting Scot football, however, serving as an assistant coach for the previous twenty years. While at Edinboro he has coached the offensive linemen, defensive backs and running backs, along with serving as the offensive coordinator.  Browning became the first head coach at Edinboro to debut with a win since Bill McDonald in 1969 when the Fighting Scots opened the 2006 season with a 28-14 win at West Chester.  He went on to lead Edinboro to a 6-5 finish, the most wins ever by a first-year coach.  That was followed by a 7-4 finish in 2007.  His next two Fighting Scot editions recorded a school-record tying nine wins.  In 2008 Edinboro ended the year at 9-2 and was ranked 20th in the final AFCA Top 25.  The Fighting Scots had a 9-4 record in 2009, making the NCAA playoffs for the first time in his tenure.  Edinboro would end the year 24th in the AFCA poll.  The Boro has posted back-to-back 7-4 finishes in 2010 and 2011.

-John Allen (James Madison '96) took over as the head coach at Lock Haven a year ago.  He is still looking for his first win in charge of the Bald Eagles, as he shows an 0-13 ledger, including 0-10 a year ago.  He had previously served as an assistant coach at Lock Haven frpom 1996-2003 before moving on to serve as the head coach of the NFL Europe Berlin Thunder in 2007 and then the coordinator of player development at Penn State prior to returning to Lock Haven.

Last Week
-California (Pa.) 24, Edinboro 14  -- the Fighting Scots looked in position to upset the sixth-ranked Vulcans before Cal scored a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns.  Edinboro grabbed a 7-3 lead in the second quarter on a one-yard run by redshirt freshman John Washington.  Cal would take a 10-7 lead with just 39 seconds remaining in the half.  Following a scoreless third quarter Cal scored early in the fourth to make it 17-7.  Edinboro answered quickly with a seven-play, 75-yard drive, capped by Cody Harris' 12-yard scoring pass to freshman Duane McKelvin.  However, just over a minute later the Vulcans were back in the end zone to ice the game.  Harris threw for 270 yards, with Marcus Johnson catching 8 passes for 116 yards.

-Indiana(Pa.) 42, Lock Haven 0  -- like Edinboro, the Bald Eagles looked poised to post an upset against a nationally-ranked team.  IUP was ranked 17th in Division II and led just 7-0 at the half, but an 81-yard kickoff return for a touchdown jump-started the Crimson Hawks as they scored once more in the third quarter, then tacked on three more touchdowns in the fourth quarter.  IUP finished with 423 yards, including 343 on the ground.  Lock Haven was held to 152 yards, including just 31 yards rushing.  Brandon Brader had 46 yards on 19 carries.  Jarrett Kratzercompleted 7 of 15 passes for 86 yards.
