CALIFORNIA, Pa. (Nov. 3, 2012) – Edinboro scored first, but No. 16 California (Pa.) tallied the final two goals, including a score with less than seven minutes remaining to deny the Fighting Scots their first trip to the PSAC title game, ending their run in the semifinals with a 2-1 victory on Saturday afternoon.
Erin Hogan's goal in the 84
th minute broke a 1-1 tie and was the deciding tally, sending the defending conference champions back to the championship game scheduled for Sunday.
Edinboro (13-4-2) struck first with a goal in the 13
th minute from
Karisa Fernandez. The senior forward took the ball off a corner pass by
Liz Debo and squeaked her shot off the fingertips of the Vulcans goalkeeper for her 10
th goal of the year and a 1-0 lead.
Cal (16-3-1) evened the score less than 10 minutes later. The offense was set up by a corner kick in the 22
nd minute when the Vulcan corner from Kayla Fransko bounced off the crossbar and into the net.
The score remained tied for the next 60 minutes, deep into the second half. The Vulcans broke the stalemate in the 84
th minute when Hogan struck off an assist from Kelsey Russo.
The evenness of the contest was reflected in the shots which were knotted at 14 apiece. California committed 16 fouls to Edinboro's nine. Ashley Magruda made six saves to earn the victory in net while
Meghan Kelly had two stops for Edinboro.
It is the second straight season Edinboro's PSAC tourney run has ended at the hands of the Vulcans. Saturday's match marked a re-match of last year's semifinal.
The Vulcans will play the East Stroudsburg-Slippery Rock winner in Sunday's final.
Edinboro now awaits its NCAA Tournament fate. The tournament field will be set during the NCAA Selection Show on Monday evening at 7:30 p.m. Fans can watch the field be announced live at NCAA.com. Edinboro was ranked fourth in the last Atlantic Regional rankings released this past Wednesday. The Fighting Scots made the trip to NCAAs for the first time a year ago.
